Thread: Beyond the Nursing Home Walls

  1. Default Beyond the Nursing Home Walls

For six years, Mr. Y.E. sits in the nursing home. Mr. Y.E. sits in the nursing home awaiting lunch. Mr. Y.E. sits in the nursing home awaiting supper. Mr. Y.E. sits in the nursing home awaiting…His imagination soars with the memories of yesteryear but his body sits imprisoned in a wheelchair, unable to see past the nursing home walls. ..until Ezer Mizion’s Make A Wish Program transported him into his world of old.
His face glowed with anticipation as two Ezer Mizion drivers helped him into a van, especially outfitted for the mobility impaired. With dignity and love, they assisted him throughout the day in and out, up and down, never stinting, always giving. First and foremost, he visited the Kotel. The eyes of the drivers filled with tears as they watched him lovingly touch the stones and commune with his Creator. Next on the agenda was a trip to Beit Yisroel, the neighborhood in which he had lived. The streets he had traversed for so many years, warm greetings of former neighbors, the grocery store in which he had purchased his daily loaf of bread, his seat in the shul in which he had daavened three times a day for a lifetime, the traditional sholom aleichem handshake from his fellow congregants, the Yeshiva where his children had attended an eternity ago and finally the cemetery where he visited the graves of his parents---footsteps in the march of time.
Mr. Y.E. sits in the nursing home awaiting lunch. A smile plays on his face as he re-lives his Day…no longer imprisoned…a member of his world once again.
